Here are some candle safety tips below.      3 P's of Fire safety     Prevent, Plan, and Practice

• Use a long handled lighter 
• Keep Candles out of reach of children and pets

What classifies as a Bio-hazard?

A bio-hazard is defined as being a risk to human or environmental health through biological work, especially with microorganisms. There are many forms of bio-hazards that some of us may come into contact with on a daily basis. For example, Waste Management Workers are exposed to infectious diseases in their working day-to-day lives. The Scoop on Mold

Mold can be a complicated topic and often goes untreated.  Before you can address the mold in your house, it helps to know a bit about this organism. Mold is a microscopic fungus that travels through the air. Unlike plants, which make their own food, mold eats by dissolving inorganic and organic materials in the environment. In fact, mold often breaks down debris in nature. Yet mold can become problematic when it appears in your home.

Did you know there are several different types of mold?  Some of the most common are:

• Penicillium
• Cladosporium
• Fusarium 
• Stachybotrys

Stachybotrys is often referred to as toxic or black mold. However, it can also be gray, green or brown.  

All types of mold need water to grow. That is why mold spores often appear in damp areas of your home. A moisture problem, such as a burst pipe, drainage backup or leak, can also lead to mold issues.  Before the mold cleanup begins, the source must be located.  SERVPRO of Marion/Middleboro can assist in finding the excess water fueling the infestation.  

Mold will not go away on its own. While drying wet areas will stop the mold from spreading, this step alone does not eliminate the problem.

In fact, because mold is so prevalent, it is impossible to completely remove all spores from your home. Still, any visible clusters of the fungus should be addressed before they lead to further problems.

Simply spraying the mold with bleach will not make the fungus go away. The bleach itself may also be toxic. While there are some safe cleaning products available, you are better off contacting a mold remediation company.

Hoarding can lead to homes filled with extreme clutter to full capacity from years of accumulation, making living conditions unsanitary and crowded. Bugs, fleas, rats and other vermin may be present, at which point an exterminator would need to be called. At times, hoarding may spread to outside the home as well, to storage facilities, or even the garage or yard.

How to tell if Your Hot Water Heater is going bad

Is your Hot Water Heater on it's way out?

Hot water heaters will typically last you between 10-15 years. When internal components become corroded and mineral build up occurs, your heater can begin to leak. Without correction, this small leak can turn into something more serious – and you may find yourself with a basement full of water. Below are some telltale signs that your hot water heater is on its way out, and some simple maintenance you can do to prevent disaster.

1. Check

Check for power if there is no hot water. While no hot water can be a sure sign that the water heater has failed, it could also mean the pilot light is out or the circuit breaker tripped.

2. Examine

Examine the water that comes out of the hot faucet. If it appears rusty, this signals an upcoming failure of your water heater. Look for signs of muddy water or increased sediment in the water tank. Attach a hose to the drainage bib on the water heater, turn the unit off and drain it to examine its contents. Muddy water or increased sediment signals a potential failure of your water heater. When flushing the water heater, remember that the water that comes out of the hose bib at the front of the water heater is going to be extremely hot, as it will not be mixed with cold water. Use caution when flushing the water heater to avoid getting burned. Smell or taste the water. If the hot water has a metallic taste to it, this indicates that the water heater is close to breaking down.

3. Listen

Pay attention to the noises your water heater makes. While there will be normal sounds as the water heats, loud cracks and pops indicate an interaction between the heating elements inside the heater and the scale and mineral deposits built up on them.

4. Address

Take immediate action if you see leaking water around the water heater where none has leaked before. Disconnect the electricity or turn off the gas to the unit and let the water cool down before attempting to remove and replace the water heater. Leaking water indicates an internal failure in the water heater.
