Nor’Easters & The Southcaast
If you have spent any time in the Southeast area of Massachusetts, you have more than likely experienced a Nor’Easter. Nor’Easters usually occur between November & March, however, can develop as early as September lasting through April.
These storms can develop 100 miles east or west of the coastline from as far south as Georgia to New Jersey and beyond. The Nor’Easter develops where the cold air and warm water meet causing a low pressure system. Conditions often change quickly causing severe damage.
If you live or work in a flood zone or an area prone to flooding, you should have a family emergency plan to evacuate. It is also a good idea to assemble an emergency kit with medical supplies and medications that may be necessary. Always follow the public safety officials guidelines and heed warnings to avoid putting first responders at greater risk. Prepare for power outages by having flashlights ready with fresh batteries along with checking smoke and carbon monoxide detectors.
It’s not a bad idea to consider purchasing a generator to provide power during an outage and make a record of your personal property by taking photos or videos of your belongings and store them in a secure location.
It is important to prepare if possible as these storms pose the threat of storm surges, high winds, heavy snow, heavy rainfall, inland flooding and rip currents and they can last several days.
We, of course, hope you never suffer damages from a storm like this, however, if it does don’t hesitate to call SERVPRO of Marion/Middleborough. For all your storm related questions. Feel free to reach out to us for help at (508) 946-2397.
